A Linguistic Journey on Building a Paralel Corpus

This term, Ayse, one of my classmates, and I collaborated to finish task. we literally started to build our own corpus in Linguistics as a preparation for next year's course. It naturally took shorter than we expected, but as we have been informed, we only gave a start for now. Next year, It is going to take harder work to complete it. So, now let me explain the steps followed to finish the assignment.
Firstly, we logged in https://tez.yok.gov.tr/UlusalTezMerkezi/ to search for the thesis to collect. And then, we selected the files in the chart after fulfilling the blanks with the information written on our papers. There appeared numbers on the left, and names on the right hand side. In order to be able to download the thesis, we clicked on numbers. We opened a new file on DESKTOP named TEPAC including our names. Afterwards, we opened the file and copied Turkish abstract and pasted it on note book. Before saving  it as a .TXT file, we  changed it  to UTF-8 for the puspose of letting Turkish and English characters remain the same within the text. And then, we did the same thing for English abstracts. In the end, we had 100 documents at hand as we obtained 100 abstracs in Turkish and 100 abstracts in English. This was the end of assignment.

An influential figure, A.M. Celal Şengör

In this paragraph, I will introduce Celal Şengör, a scholar who inspires me particularly with his toughts in the field of education and impresses me wih his cultural intelligence, afterwards, I will mention one of his books.

     Firstly, who is Celal Şengör?
A.M. Celal Şengör, as showed above, is an eminent Turkish professor of geology and a natural historian who currently teachs at Istanbul Tehnical University, department of Geological Engineering. He is widely known for his valuable contributions to science of geology. He is a member of American Academy of Sciences, European Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Sciences.
Secondly, As I believe that one can travel across the world thanks to his thoughts written down without moving even an inch, I ordered a book of him and I, metaphorically, invited him to my study room. I know for sure that He has a lot to teach me, so I will try to be a good student while reading the book.

This is the book mentioned which contains his articles He has written on various magazines and newspapers so far and his talks he has given in different platforms. In this book, he shares his considerable knowledge of education, history, archeology, geography, literature, society and culture, and of course science takes the top priority over other fields in terms of order. He warmly invites people to enlightenment under knowledge and warns them against ignorance.

Some objective thoughts on midterms

Now, I know for sure that self-assessment, a term for self-judment about one's own progress and achievements, is crucial for success and to accelerate one's progress. Therefore, I will examine how well I did in midterms. The first exam was in Educational Psycology. I studied hard for this exam but, truth to tell, I did not study one part in the book on purpose, I just did not feel like studying it as it was about biology. Unfortunately, I was shocked when I saw that lecturer asked a lot of questions about biology. It was easy to extrapolate that I would inextricably get a lower grade compared to other exams. But, I do not feel guilty about it, anyway. We took second exam in Advanced Writing and Reading. Surprisingly, contrary to the casual style of the exam, there was no writing part, so we did not have to write anything, which made me pleasantly relaxed. I found reading part fairly tolerable, and I hope for my grade to be high. With regard to Lexical Competence exam, the third one, I passed it with flying colors. The plausible reason for this would be that I like expanding my vocabulary, correspendingly, I intensively study for it. The last exam was in Contextual Grammar. On the whole, I think I did well except for one question that I could not recall the answer no matter how desperately I tried to remember. Better luck next time. Now I'm looking forward my grades to being declared.

Some funny definitions of certain words/phrases

This is usually the thing that happens to me when lecturer asks our gueses in the class before introducing a new topic :D

I have literally experienced this when I said like this once :D
so, no matter what happens, stay positive!

Altough I like mondays, it may lead to uneasy feelings to know that tomorrow is monday.

God is the underlying reason for many things, including his generous help in the exams, thankfully.

Sometimes it definitely gets quite hard to spell certain words, especially in writing exams, But I try to be cautioned when it comes to spelling.

How does it feel to write an academic writing for the very first time?

Firstly, it is obvious that writing is something which calls for constant effort in the period of wrting. Some people consider this process as a pleasure or leisure pursuit while some believe that writing should be done for the porpuse of creating something worthy reading. My case is close to both of them. This term, we, as a class at college, stepped into academic writing with the assignment of Dr. Erdem Akbaş, a lecturer at Erciyes University. As a start, He thaught us some principles of academic writing so that our writing could sound academic. But, playing according to rules is sometimes harder than knowing the rules of a game, it is also true for academic writing. Although I have written a great many essays and paragraphs in English, I can admit that I had a bit difficulty in sounding academic. But, what is not hard at the beginning? So, I determinedly tried to show perseverance to be better every day. I can perceive that the more I show progress, the greater I feel. When it comes to my progress, I can say that "so far so good." Yet, I sometimes struggle, anyway. I am in search of writing the best I could. I'm writing about Community Language Learning, a language teaching approach developed by Charles Curran. I have written 2 paragraphs, which is supposed to make 5 paragraphs in the end. I'm on the process of writing the third paragraph now. I hope that I will be more proficient over time.

The Movements to the GARDEN of PEACE

Hello everybody, this is the essay I wrote about world peace as an assignment in the first term of my freshman year at college.

The Movements to the GARDEN of PEACE

Mankind perceptibly has made a big leap in many areas including science and technology so far, and a great progress has been made in the accumulation of extensive knowledge. The growth of knowledge was an advantage for people, and it urged them to make use of it in different areas. However, this advantage turned out something diabolical in time because some people unconsciously or intentionally misused it, and became too manipulative. Therefore, they tended to forget about humanitarian values, which potentially leaded to chaos; still ongoing wars, conflicts, and violence in the world. All these cost people to lose welfare, and long-term peace in the world was adversely affected and destroyed. Now, world peace may seem so utopian for many, it is not still concluded that global peace cannot be rebuilt, though. Although, on the surface, it seems that it is out of the question to achieve the world peace, we surely can get over it by taking steps in disarmament, achieving unity for world civilization and resolving governmental issues.

Initially, when it comes to world peace, the crucial and efficient step for it is disarmament. As is known, disarmament is “the act of reducing, limiting, or abolishing weapons.”[1] To achieve this, some serious actions have been taken over time, however, unfortunately, they did not last long as expected, and treaties even sometimes backfired because some participants withdrew from the agreements at will. Despite this, in the civilized and modern world, nationalities can still come to compromise and mutual agreement at the issue of disarmament by providing and enhancing security with cooperation in respect to political diplomacy and international affairs. Thus, with a high degree of probability, we can have the chance to abolish the most destructive arm type, nuclear weapon. According to a report held in the Sabah newspaper, there are 438 nuclear power stations in 30 countries while there are 42 stations still built up now[2]. It can be concluded from the report that nuclear weapon is a huge privilege and a powerful convention in the army, concurrently, it is explicitly something essential for nationalities to stand tall and strong, as well. However, the necessity of power can be annihilated, and this point can be truly obtained by terminating invasions. If there were no invasions, there would not correspondingly be power requirement. Considering the argument above, to have a better and peaceful world, we are supposed to eternally capitulate all kinds of weapons for the sake of world peace.

Secondly, it is also crucial to achieve unity for world civilization for the benefit of world peace. First primary solution for unity is that there should not be any severe social, religious, ethnic segregation or any conflict of ideology in public and on international field because these kinds of issues are very likely to trigger an unending commotion. To quash the sense of discrimination and increase the awareness of pluralism and egalitarianism, we are supposed to elucidate one another that our fundamental desires and requires are the same as human beings. Within this direction, we can effectively work off our energy to conduct negotiations in an innovative way at intervals by making headway. There appears then to be acceleration in the growth of technology, science and any required area for the good of all mankind. Once, Henry Ford laid emphasis on the importance of solidarity by saying that “coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”[3] As he outspokenly pointed out, it is momentous to confederate with one another in point of civilization as for the belief in a perdurable world peace.

The last but not least step to sustain world peace could be reviewing governmental issues extensively to make sure that there is no any abetment triggering chaos within the countries. Each government has the privilege to lead their own country as requested. However, there should be some certain restraints on the rights of governments inspected by International court of justice. Primal restriction is that no government can exert authority over their people for its political expedience. In the contrary case, civil war may be inevitable for certain as communities, to knowledgeable extent, have adequately developed not to victimize themselves and to take a stand against any tyrant sovereign. As an epitome for a rebel against government can be ongoing civil war in Syria since 2011 and causing 470.000 people to die over the course of 5 years.[4] With a view not to experiencing such a slaughter again, we, beforehand, are to work this affair out in an official way rather than causing massacres and shedding innocents’ blood. To achieve this scot-free with caution, and to obviate the risk of serious civil war, there should be some written constitutions about negligent governments to be over thrown. Under this circumstance, welfare would not be lost in the countries because governors, perforce, are supposed to abide by the rules. As it was previously stated, unrestricted prerogatives should not be handed over to governments so as to establish peace in the world.

In epitome, the solutions that I brought about at the threshold of the writing such as disarmament, achieving unity and resolving governmental issues may finally turn out to be vital to obtain world peace. To try our hand at achieving global peace with ease, we, as a duty of each individual, can simply pacify our hearts so as to act en masse as companions. Under this circumstance, we do not have to use guns against one another, which simultaneously may carry out two principal points of cogitations above and drive us to a comprehensive peace. The justification for this act is that disarmament may take top priority to obtain world peace as violence is mostly intensified by the usage of all kinds of weapons. The entire point is that either we will learn -if fate secretly smiles on human kind- to live all together in peace and contentment and to invigorate earth with love and radiant beauty in the fullness of time or we will not have a tale to tail to our grandchildren because there, beyond the shadow of a doubt, will be no man kind on earth as we all come to an ineluctable and bitter end, decease.
